Sadya is the traditional vegetarian feast of Kerala. Usually served as lunch on Banana Leaves, it consists of par boiled rice, side dishes, savories, pickles and desserts. Tradition insists that the tapering end of the leaf points to the left of the seated guest. The most common ingredients in all the dishes are rice, coconut and coconut oil as they are abundant in Kerala. The most pleasing thing about traveling through Kerala is that you don’t have to eat the same kind of food everywhere. One can tantalize your taste buds in each part of the Kerala as all the districts has its unique mouth watering lavish savories which are a must try. Almost all of the traditional Kerala dishes are prepared using rice followed by tapioca and coconut while the various types of spices add intense flavors that are finger licking good. Most of the foods are cooked using coconut oil and are served only on banana leaves. Boiled rice (i.e. Choru in Malayalam) is the base item of any meal in Kerala, which has a lot of nutritional values.

Following are some of the popular traditional Kerala dishes:
Sadya: It is one of the most popular and liked dishes of Kerala. Sadya is a traditional vegetarian feast which consists of Choru and several other curries and appetizers. Sadya is prepared in a same way all over Kerala during festival and special occasions. Another best thing about Sadya meal is that it is served in large banana leaves, which gives it a unique identity. A usual Sadya meal includes Lime Pickle, Aviyal, Bitterguard Thoran, Kaalan, Paayasam, Buttermilk, and Sambar with Choru in the center. It’s the perfect meal that offers actual taste of Kerala cuisine.

Unakka Kappa Puzhukku (Steamed Dry-Tapioca): This is another most popular and healthy dish of Kerala. This dish is prepared using dried Tapioca and is consumed on a daily basis just like rice. Tapioca can be cooked in many different ways and is often cooked along with fish curries and other non-vegetarian dishes.

Fish Curries: Since Kerala is a land of sea and backwaters, fish items are a staple food among the locals. Some of the popular dishes include Kunnamkulam Fish Curry, Meenmutta Ularthiyathu, Thiruvananthapuram Meen Curry and more.
